Some film locations make you squint and guess. Not this one. The stainless-steel diner glowing on Astoria Boulevard, planes growling low overhead, looks exactly like the kind of place where a couple of Queens wiseguys would plot to steal a truck β because in Martin Scorsese's Goodfellas (1990), that's precisely what happened here.
The Scene
Early in the film, the story jumps to a moment captioned on screen: "Idlewild Airport 1963." A young Henry Hill and Tommy DeVito lean against their car outside the diner, watching cargo trucks roll past. When a driver ducks inside for a bite, the two slide into his cab and drive the rig away.
Over it all runs Henry's famous voiceover: "By the time I grew up, there was thirty billion a year in cargo moving through Idlewild Airport β and believe me, we tried to steal every bit of it."
It's the scene that launches Henry's adult life of crime β no more parking cars; now he's boosting entire tractor-trailers. Note who's not there: De Niro's Jimmy Conway doesn't appear. If you're picturing him smashing a payphone, you're thinking of a different Queens diner β see Trivia.
The Backstory
The Airline Diner opened in late 1955, a gleaming stainless-steel dining car in the shadow of what was then Idlewild Airport. A Queens Gazette retrospective on that December notes the diner had "just opened the previous week" β so it's fed airport workers and late-night regulars for roughly seventy years.
Decades later it joined the Jackson Hole family β the Greek-owned burger chain that opened its first Manhattan location in 1972 and built its name on the 7oz burger. The new name went up, but the old soul stayed: the vintage neon sign still glows out front, the chrome still shines, and the booths still welcome you like you own the joint β the mid-century time capsule that made Scorsese's location scouts reach for their cameras.
What to Look For
- The neon sign β the vintage marquee glow out front is the diner's signature shot, day or night.
- The stainless-steel facade β a classic dining-car exterior, barely changed since the '50s.
- The booths β slide into one and order the namesake 7oz burger with a milkshake.
- The lot out front β picture the cargo truck idling there while Henry and Tommy make their move.
- The planes β LaGuardia's flight paths pass right overhead: the same roar the wiseguys heard.
Getting There
69-35 Astoria Blvd N, East Elmhurst, Queens, NY 11370. Take the N or W to Astoria Blvd, then the Q19 or M60-SBS bus east along Astoria Boulevard to 72nd Street. Or ride the R to 65th St and walk north about ten minutes. Heads-up: it's cash only per the diner's site, open 8:30 a.m.β10 p.m. SundayβThursday and till midnight FriβSat β check before you go. Trivia
- Two diners, one movie. The phone-booth scene β Jimmy learning Tommy was whacked, not "made" β was filmed at the other Goodfellas diner: Maspeth's Clinton Diner (56-26 Maspeth Ave), renamed the Goodfellas Diner after the film.
- The Maspeth diner burned in June 2018 and never reopened. Before the fire it was a pilgrimage site: Philip Seymour Hoffman always requested "the waiting-for-Tommy booth," and Pierce Brosnan stopped by for selfies in 2014.
- Scorsese came back. The same Maspeth diner appears in The Irishman (2019) β De Niro's meeting with "Whispers" was filmed a few booths from the Goodfellas booth.
- The real heist behind the fiction. Cargo theft was the crew's bread and butter; the 1978 Lufthansa heist at JFK (about $6 million in cash and jewels, masterminded by the real Jimmy Burke) was the most famous score. Goodfellas never shows it β only Henry's stunned reaction to the news.
- Seventy years of chrome. Opened in December 1955, it's still serving under the flight path β one of the last of its breed in the borough.
The Hunt Clue
Where planes fly low over Astoria Boulevard,
a chrome-clad diner keeps watch in the jets' backyard β
steal a seat like a wiseguy, tip like you're made,
and hum the "Layla" piano as the evening fades.
