You know this building even if you’ve never seen Friends. The six-story walk-up on a West Village corner, fire escapes climbing its facade, green shutters framing the windows β it appeared in the establishing shots before nearly every episode of the most beloved sitcom of the ’90s. Millions of travelers have stood here, and every one of them started their visit the same way: “So this is where Monica and Rachel lived!” And here’s the best part: nobody in Friends ever set foot inside it.
The Scene
Monica Geller and Rachel Green lived here, directly across the hall from Joey Tribbiani and Chandler Bing β in the world the show built with a few seconds of exterior footage before every cut to a California soundstage.
Here’s the great Hollywood sleight of hand: Friends ran on NBC from 1994 to 2004, ten seasons and 236 episodes, and nearly all of it was filmed at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank β season 1 on Stage 5, seasons 2 through 10 on Stage 24, which was renamed “The Friends Stage” after the finale. The cast never filmed in New York. Even the fountain from the opening credits sits on the Warner Bros. backlot in Burbank. But the apartment building’s exterior is the real deal, and it stands right here in Greenwich Village.
The Backstory
The actual 90 Bedford Street was constructed around the turn of the 20th century (records list 1898β99 and 1900) β an “old law” tenement, built under an era of building law that required air shafts in every bedroom. It has six stories, about two dozen apartments, and commercial space on the ground floor.
That’s a fun detail for fans: the building really is a walk-up with homes above and a business below, just like the show implied. The business, though, is the well-reviewed Little Owl restaurant β not Central Perk, and not a coffee shop at all. The Little Owl simply happens to sit beneath television history.
One charming bit of accuracy: in season 4, Ross mails Rachel an invitation bearing the fictional address “495 Grove Street.” The real building sits on the corner of Bedford and Grove, so the producers kept the characters on the right block β even if the apartment numbers are pure fantasy.
What to Look For
Stand on the corner of Bedford and Grove and match the facade to your memory: the classic turn-of-the-century frontage, the fire escapes, the green shutters. The building has appeared on guided tours for years, and it’s become such a popular destination that Google added it as a tourist attraction with over a thousand near-perfect reviews.
A few notes for a respectful visit: this is a real apartment building where real people live. Don’t sneak inside β Monica’s apartment doesn’t exist in there, nor does the hallway. Photos from the street and sidewalk are fair game.
Getting There
Address: 90 Bedford Street (corner of Grove Street), West Village, New York, NY 10014.
By subway: The closest stops are Christopher Street (1 train, about a 3-minute walk) and West 4th StreetβWashington Square (A, C, E, F, and B, D, M trains, roughly 4β5 minutes on foot). The stroll to Bedford and Grove takes you through some of the prettiest blocks in Manhattan β perfect for a post-hunt wander.
While you’re here, remember the gang didn’t stray far: Phoebe’s fictional apartment was just a couple of blocks away at 5 Morton Street.
Trivia
- Apart from the season 4 finale (shot on location in London), the cast never filmed an episode in New York City.
- The opening-credits fountain isn’t in Central Park; it’s on the Warner Bros. backlot, and you can visit it on the studio tour in Burbank.
- In one episode, the gang aims a long “poking device” out a window toward Ugly Naked Guy’s apartment β and the real geography of Bedford and Grove makes that shot nearly impossible, which fans love to point out.
The Hunt Clue
Follow the sounds of laughter to the corner of Bedford and Grove. Look up for the green shutters and the fire escapes where six friends shared a decade of memories. Can you spot the window where they watched their ‘Ugly Naked Neighbor’?
