Some studios you visit. This one you ride β on cables. Deep inside 30 Rockefeller Plaza sits Studio 8H, the home of Saturday Night Live, and it is literally floating: the studio’s walls, floor, and ceiling were built as assemblies suspended on heavy steel cables and springs, insulated from the building’s frame so the rumble of the New York City subway can’t touch a broadcast. They built a room that hovers so America could hear the punchlines. Welcome to NBC Studios β ninety years of television history, suspended in midair.
The Scene
Studio 8H is the most famous room in American comedy, and it started as the most serious room in American music. It opened with NBC’s 30 Rock facilities in 1933, became the broadcast home of Toscanini’s NBC Symphony Orchestra in 1937 β seventeen years with the maestro β converted to television around 1950, and in 1975 a scrappy late-night sketch show moved in and never left. The same floating floor that once held a symphony orchestra now holds the cold open.
Today the lineup is SNL in 8H, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 6B, Late Night with Seth Meyers in 8G β plus TODAY, Nightly News, and MSNBC. Historic firsts: Howdy Doody, Kraft Television Theatre (1947), Today (1952), and The Tonight Show‘s New York chapter (1957).
The Backstory
NBC moved into 30 Rockefeller Plaza in 1933, when its studios were the largest broadcasting facility in the world β radio’s cathedral. The Page Program began that same year, and its Pages have led public tours ever since. The current Tour at NBC Studios relaunched November 3, 2023: 75β90 minutes through the working studios, starting at The Shop at NBC Studios on the ground floor.
Then there’s the Beatles story β the greatest almost-moment in SNL history. On April 24, 1976, Lorne Michaels looked into the camera and offered the Beatles a certified check for $3,000 to reunite (“give Ringo less, that’s up to you”). Lennon and McCartney were watching together at the Dakota, blocks away. Lennon later told Playboy: “We nearly got into a cab, but we were actually too tired.” Michaels upped it to $3,200 a month later; Harrison eventually collected $750 for a solo spot. The most famous uncashed check in television.
What to Look For
The hunt has two layers. Outside: the 30 Rockefeller Plaza marquee and entrance on Sixth Avenue between 49th and 50th β the NBC peacock, the flags, the plaza. Studio 8H itself is high inside the building and invisible from the street, so the real prize is the tour: The Tour at NBC Studios takes you through the working studios with an NBC Page as your guide. Book at thetouratnbcstudios.com and check current days and hours before visiting.
SNL lore: some audience seats are said to be old Yankee Stadium seats β the timing fits (the Stadium was renovated in 1974β75, just as SNL debuted).

Trivia
- Studio 8H’s floating construction β walls, floor, and ceiling suspended on cables and springs β was engineered to defeat subway vibration. It worked: the trains still rumble underneath, and the show goes on.
- Toscanini conducted the NBC Symphony Orchestra in 8H from 1937 to 1954 β seventeen years of the world’s most famous conductor in what’s now a comedy studio.
- The Beatles’ $3,000 offer came on April 24, 1976; Lennon and McCartney were at the Dakota watching and nearly took a cab down. Lennon: “We were actually too tired.”
- Public tours of the NBC studios have run since 1933 β the Page Program that staffs them is the same age.
