The History:
A “Nothing” Exterior: While the interior scenes of Monk’s Café were filmed on a soundstage in Los Angeles, the iconic “RESTAURANT” neon sign outside Tom’s was used for almost every establishing shot in the show.
Musical Muse: Before Seinfeld, the diner inspired Suzanne Vega’s 1987 hit song “Tom’s Diner,” where she describes sitting at the counter and watching the people go by.
Presidential Patronage: Being located near Columbia University, it has hosted famous students over the years, including Barack Obama and John McCain (who visited while his daughter attended).

“Head uptown toward Columbia to find the place where a show about ‘nothing’ began. Look for the neon red sign that welcomed Jerry, George, Elaine, and Kramer for a Big Salad and a cup of coffee!”
